August recognised for excellence in Australian web design

sept. 28 2007
August was awarded the High Commended McFarlane Prize for Excellence in Australian Web Design. Presented in Sydney at the Web Directions South conference in front of 600 delegates.

August’s High Commended Award for Occupational Psychiatry had us thrilled. Selected from over 500 nominations, it was August’s only submission to the awards - so we’re very happy with our strike rate!

Named in honour of noted Australian web pioneer Nigel McFarlane, the McFarlane Prize recognises and encourages excellence in web design by Australian web professionals and digital design firms.

The Prize rewards excellence in web design in the broadest sense, from the appropriate use of technology, to design aesthetics, to its impact more broadly on the web.

The Prize is a showcase of the best in Australian web design, and aims to inspire other Australian developers and digital design firms in their own endeavours.

The McFarlane Prize is awarded by a jury of Australian experts in various fields of web design and development. The decision process has two stages. In the first stage, entries are assessed for their adherence to best practices in accessibility and standards based coding (correct and valid use of CSS and HTML). These criteria are outlined in detail here.

The top 15 sites from this phase are individually assessed in four areas by members of the jury who have expertise in a particular area.

These areas are:

  • Accessibility
  • Usability
  • Design
  • Coding

Based on the two rounds of judging, the McFarlane Prize shortlist was announced on September 22nd, 2007. The announcement of the winner was made at the Web Directions Conference, September 27th 2007.

A warm congratulations to the other nominees, and special mention to major prize winner andrewsmustresign.com by Michael Koukoullis. Special shout-out to the guys from Propeller Global and also to John Allsop for organising such a magnificent event.
